Since then it has always been the "capital" although it was destroyed by the Babylonians at the end of the Firts Temple and again by the Romans at the end of the Second Temple. Jerusalem was reinstated as the capital at the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948

In modern times, David Ben Gurion, the first prime minister of the State of Israel moved the Knesset to Jerusalem in 1949. In 1980 the Knesset passed a law restating that "Jerusalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel"
