John Stonehouse MP (Labour) for Walsall North previously Wednesbury. The Office of Postmaster General was abolished soon after his incumbency.
Stonehouse is famous for faking his own suicide owing to impending Bankruptcy and other problems and absconding to Australia. he would provably have got away with it but for the fact that the Australian Police were on the lookout for Lord Lucan who had also disappeared after allegedly murdering his children's nanny. Thinking Stonehouse to be Lucan they arrested him and he was returned to Britain , tried and imprisoned for fraud and had to resign from Parliament, the Conservatives winning the subsequent By-election. Stonehouse is now dead.
