Alexandria, Egypt (named after Alexander the great). The Hellenistic period refers to the time from Alexander's death until the time of the rise of the Roman Emprie. Other important cultural centers were Antioch, in Syria, along with Ephesus and Rhodes, among others.
Possibly the most representative of all Hellenistic cities was Alexandria, which was built by the policies of Ptolemy Soter and the influence of his quite remarkable wife, Berenice. It became the capital of Egypt, and I believe it was culturally was only rivaled by Rome and Carthage.
