After the English Civil War and the execution of King Charles I in 1649, the UK became the 'Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland'. The head of state had the title of 'Lord Protector of the Commonwealth'. The first Lord Protector was Oliver Cromwell who ruled from Dec-1653 until his death in Sep-1658. He was succeeded by his son, Richard Cromwell, until his resignation in May 1659.
Richard was the last Lord Protector with his rule been followed by chaos until the Commonwealth was formally dissolved with the restoration of the monarchy, in May 1660.
