Yes. He was a corporal messenger/runner for the 16th Bavarian Reserve Regiment, one of the most dangerous positions a soldier could hold. He participated in several major WW1 battles and often encountered enemy fire. He was wounded and temporarily blinded during WW1, and was twice decorated for bravery.
