He spent the next 10 years warning about the ambitions of Nazi Germany but was largely ignored by the government. At the outbreak of war in 1939, he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. When Neville Chamberlain resigned in 1940, Winston Churchill, at the age of 65, was appointed Prime Minister. He remained in that post until the election of 1945 when he was unbelievably beaten by his then deputy, Clement Attlee. He was reappointed as Prime Minister in 1951 and resigned due to ill health in 1955 at the age of 80. He died in 1965.
