The vice president becomes the president if the president dies. Such is the main reason for the office of vice president.
Theodore Roosevelt
John Tyler was the first person to take office after a president died.
John F. Kennedy was indeed our youngest elected president. Teddy Roosevelt was our youngest president because he became president when McKinley was assassinated.
No person who is not elligible to be President can become Vice-President. No person may be elected more than twice to the office of President. There is disagreement as to whether this prevents a former President from serving as a Vice-President, since he would not have been elected to the office of President should he succeed to that office due to the death or disability of the President. But he clearly would be prevented from running for election after filling out the remainder of the term of a President who died in office.
That would be John Tyler, who took office after the death of William Henry Harrison. Harrison was the first US president to die in office, and he died of natural causes after only 31 days in office.
1. The president passes away. 2. The president is convicted of abuse of power and is removed from office or he/she is removed because he/she had done a high crime, like theft. 3. The president is impeached by 2/3 vote in Congress.
