Slavery has always been illegal in British Law. Laws forbidding it have been recognized to exist from 1102. The practical definition of its illegality in modern law dates from R v Knowles, ex parte Somersett 1772.

Slavery however did exist in states (such as the USA) that were under British jurisdiction but not subject directly to British law.
