Margaret Thatcher; this period of time saw the British miner's strike, during which time Thatcher instigated a massive pit closure programme in favour of going over to gas or nuclear power. When the miner's went on strike she authorised extreme repressive measures against them, which saw a lot of police brutality, civil rights abuse and violence.

She also refused to increase Government aid to Ethiopia at the time of the Ethiopian Famine of '84 / '85, prompting rock star Bob Geldof to launch the Band Aid and Live Aid projects, and also refused (along with the Reagan Administration in the US) to take out sanctions against the South African apartheid regime, resulting in many British and US citizens boycotting the purchase of South African goods.
