I'm not expert in Roman history and this answer is my impression rather than carefully verified, with that disclaimer:
The Senate had seen the democracy in Rome changed by Caesar into an effective Dictatorship where the 'SPQR' slogan of democracy and the role of the Senate had been made powerless symbols, and they wanted by killing Caesar to restore the democracy that had been lost.
Caesar is the origin of the phrase 'crossing the Rubicon' to represent when established limits on power are ignored, for when Caesar moved his army across the Rubicon river towards Rome, which was prohibited because of the threat is posed of a general seizing power militarily, which proved a real threat when Caesar did just that.
Victors write the history, the line of Caesars, and so the Senate is more remembered as evil murderers than as defenders of democracy.
