The common answer is "Amerigo Vespucci" and that is probably what your teacher will expect to hear. But there is much doubt among today's scholars if this answer is correct. The exploration of Northern America was sponsored by a merchant from Bristol, England named Richard Ameryk, two years even before Vespucci first visited South America (he never went north). Bristol records of the time actually use the name "America" for the North American lands visited and discovered by the Ameryk-sponsored expedition. The German printer who first used the name 'America" on a map was not altogether sure of the name, let alone of its origin: in the second edition of the map he had it changed back to 'Terra Incognita' ('Unknown Land').Two things are certain: Vespucci, nor the people around him, ever called the lands 'America' themselves. Naming it after him using the feminine form of his first name is also not what you would expect. So with the very early actual use of "America" on British charts after Ameryk's expedition there is a solid case to be made that that might well be the actual origin of the name.
There wasn't any settlements in America at that time. But the first American Settlement was in Jamestown, VA

The word "America" is derived from the Latin version of the name of Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. The German geographer Martin Waldseemüller was the first to use the name in reference to the New World in his 1507 map. Since Vespucci was one of the first to propose that the newly discovered lands were part of a separate continent, the name America was chosen to honor him.
Leif Ericson was a Norse explorer who was said to be the very first European persaon to land in North America. He had excellent leadership ability and led a crew of 35 men to Bjarni.
Lief Ericson is generally regarded as having been the first European to explore North America. There have been sagas and legends about earlier European explorations, but no clear evidence has been found to date. The very first person to engage exploration, however, will never be known. The early ancestors of the First Nations people would have done the first exploring in North America.
