The 4th President of the United States was James Madison from March 4, 1809 to March 4, 1817. His Vice President was George Clinton from 1809-1812. George Clinton died in 1912 and the Vice President spot was vacant unti l1913. Elbridge Gerry was the Vice President from 1813-1814 .

James S. Sherman was the Vice President from 1909-1912 under President William Howard Taft (1909-1913) James S. Sherman died on October 30, 1912, and there was no Vice President for the rest of President Taft's term.

James S. Sherman (born October 24, 1855 in Utica, New York; died October 30, 1912 in Utica, New York) succeeded Charles W. Fairbanks as the twenty-seventh Vice-President of the United States, serving March 4, 1909 and his death.

Upon James S. Sherman's death in office, there was a vacancy in the role of Vice-President between October 30, 1912 and March 4, 1913.
