In World War 1 the German allies were Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. Italy belonged to the trippel-alliance since 1882, but swapped sides in 1915 to fight against Austria-Hungary.
The Allies flanked the Germans because it made tactical sense to do so.
