Rome's wealthy upper class was called the Patrician class at the beginning of the city. However, over time ,the Plebeians, who were the poor at the beginning of the city, gained wealth and status. When this occurred, the two groups were referred to as the aristocrats as opposed to the Equites or the Proletariat.

the rich and powerful people of Rome were the Patricians at least at the beginning of the city. Remember, ancient Rome had a long history with many social changes and as a consequence of these changes, wealth and power also changed.

The wealthy citizens were the patricians (the aristocrats) and the equites, who belonged to an entrepreneurial class which was given the status of cavalrymen and formed a lower tier of the aristocracy.
