They never met the requirements to maintain their citizenship to The United States. At this time the United States didn't have dual citizenship but if your parents were Americans and you were born in another country, then you would have to return to the mainland US and live for 5 years. But as it was both of the men got involved in the political structure of Hawaii and even if they had been US citizens, they would have lost that since one can not be an American and hold political office in another country.
