Originally Germany was at peace with the Soviet Union when they both invaded Poland in 1939, then Britain and France declared war with the Axis since they had an alliance from WW1, the Axis consisted of: Greater Germany (therefor consisting of all the little countries surrounding it that it had invaded since 1933) The Kingdom of Italy and Japan. The reason why the Allies won is due to Britain being an island nation and having superior planes since Germany was using 1933 style planes and couldn't launch a major attack, Furthermore since Germany couldn't quickly conquer Britain it had to war on both fronts with the Soviets on the East. Also due to the reparations in WW1 they had no provinces in Africa so their invasion force could be rebelled easily. Italy, with the loss of Mussolini switched sides in the war in 1943. Japan in the Oceanic war was doing well as it had taken the Chinese railway system in 1937 but failed to attack Russia but due to its climate, failed and lost a major port, then America came in and nuked them without warning to do so and in civilian cities, breaching a couple of war rules, they also didn't tell the Russians about their nuclear technology openly so Stalin was pissed with them. Finally to end the war entirely operation D-day was launched and caught the Germans by surprise (also they didn't have food or oil).
