John Brown planned to steal weapons from where they were being stored for the war in Harpers Ferry and distribute them to slaves and start a slave rebellion. Obviously John Brown was an abolitionist and believed that slavery was wrong and wanted to end it.
Simply because he was a fanatical Abolitionist - and therefore not typical of Northern attitudes.

No, and most abolitionists were white, because most blacks were slaves. Some blacks might have contributed by doing stuff as an abolitionist, but an abolitionist did not have to be a slave. (More appropreatly slaves couldent, only freed slaves could do anything)

Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) was a small town, where a Federal Arsenal was located. Brown became convinced that if he started an uprising among slaves by providing weapons and strategy, the revolt would spread across the entire south. Thus, by raiding the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, he, his sons, and men could seize weapons and provide them to slaves, during what he envisioned as a revolt.
