the Ui Neill were hereditary chiefs of tyrone in ulster. they accepted the title Earl of Tyrone from the tudors and later went into exile with most of the other chieftains in 1605 after defeat in the 9 year war against elizabeth 1.
That's incorrect. The O'NEILL accecpted the Earldom. The ancestors of the O'Neill family were called the Ui Neill, but this was not a surname, just a dynastic term. The O'Neills take their surname from an ancestor called Niall Glundubh (as far as I recall) who lived and died in the 10th century. It was his grandson or great-grandsons who first used the surname O'Neill.
The term Ui Neill describes the descendants of Niall Niogaillach mac Eochagh Mughmeadon (died about 450), but, as I said, was simply a descriptive term used to denote them as descendants of Niall; surnames would not be used in Ireland until hundreds of years later.

Heartily wielding the mighty family motto of "For My Country!" through what would be for many the deadly sands of time, the proud and noble Irish surname of Higgins rises vistoriously through history from County Sligo, where they held a family seat from the most ancient of times. Descended from a grandson of Niall of the Nine Hostages, the 4th century High King of Ireland and founder of the Ui Neill Clan, the surname was first rendered in the Gaelic language as "O huigin", which derives from the word "uiging", akin to the Norse word "viking".
Majority of them are Protestant yet the current manager Michael O' Neill is indeed a Catholic. Mon the Norn Iron!
No, Ui Neill or O'Neill did not originate from Scotland. Its origins come from the Province of Ireland known as Ulster were the O'Neill tribe ruled vast majorities for hundreds of years.
Ui Neill literally means 'son of Neill' It goes way back to Medieval times.......Anyway if your name is eg. Niall O'Neill that translates to 'Niall, son of Neill' The O'Neill motto 'Lamh Dearg Abu' translates to 'Up the Red hand' as the Red Hand is the symbol of Ulster which is where the O'Neill tribe origionally came from. Also they were one of the most feered tribes in Ireland for hundreds of years and ruled what would now be known as Tyrone hench why it is called 'Contai Ui Neill' or 'O'Neills County'
