Island Hopping
The Allied forces primarily advanced toward Japan through two strategies: the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific and the push from the Philippines. Island-hopping involved capturing key islands, establishing bases, and bypassing heavily fortified ones to get closer to Japan. Concurrently, forces in the Philippines, after regaining control, aimed to launch further assaults on the Japanese home islands, ultimately leading to the final stages of the war. These strategies effectively weakened Japanese defenses and facilitated the Allied approach to Japan.
The Americans and Allied Forces won the battle of Iwo Jima and most of the battles to take back the islands on the island hopping campaign.
The Allied forces responded to the waves of attacks by the Japanese during World War II by implementing strategies such as island hopping, air and naval superiority, and coordinated ground offensives to gradually push back and defeat the Japanese forces.
The Allied Naval Forces went after the Japanese island by island in the South Pacific. That strategy was called island hopping. Admiral Chester Nimitz was in charge of the Pacific Theater naval actions. So he earned the name Island Hopper.
