The first official expedition to explore the western frontier was Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838). They set out in May 1804 to explore and map the American West.

I would like to suggest that the Native Americans were the first to explore the American West before Lewis and Clark.

The earliest known exploration of North America is dated approximately 1000 AD. The Vikings, who were very brave to sail on the cold, northern Atlantic Ocean, not knowing what they were going to find or if they would even survive. Because the Vikings, people who came from Scandinavia, were excellent sailors and use to severe weather conditions, survived and began a colony on Greenland. Remnants of huts and land use are still recognizable on that island.
Vikings do not get credit for being the first to explore North America (the United States) No permanent settlement is recorded that proves the Vikings touched land on what is now the Eastern United States.
By the fourteenth century, however, there is evidence that not only Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish explorers were sailing toward the North American continent.
Prince Henry of Portugal, Columbus, Vespucci from Italy, and a long list of Spanish explorers whose names can be added to this long list of brave men.
see: Vespucci, 1454-1512; Francisco Vasquez Coronado, first to see the Grand Canyon, 1500's; Juan Cabrillo who explored the California coast, Vasco Nunez de Balboa who sailed up the California coast to Monterey. Read about these brave men who explored the New World.
Ponce deLeon, 1513 and 1521 who visited what is now known as Florida
Ship building had become safer, larger, and more comfortable than the early ships. Catholicism was rampant, and the Pope was seeking more followers; more fish for Catholics to partake because of religious rules, and, of course, seeking gold and wealth, and acquisitions of more land were important reasons that the government was willing to provide funds for the ships and supplies.
It was an exciting time of exploration. The world became much larger and more interesting to the people who had no idea that the world was so interesting, dangerous, and beautiful.
