It is thought that Norwegian Vikings were the first people (from Europe) to reach the New World and settle there. Their settlement, named Vinland by the Norse and cleverly renamed Newfoundland, did not flourish greatly as later colonies from European superpowers such as Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal did.

If your question is referring to the British people, then the first successful settlement was the Jamestown settlement. It was financed and started by the Virginia Company of London, a joint-stock company. It eventually thrived on the perfected tobacco plants of John Rolfe (husband of Pocahontas), as tobacco was a large demand in the Old World. The British did attempt to settle before Jamestown. The Roanoke settlement was an early colonization attempt, but that endeavor was unsuccessful. Much of the Roanoke Colony remains a mystery as the people of the colony vanished and left behind no evidence or reason for their disappearance.
