The patricians, who were the upper tier of the aristocracy, were mainly owners of large landed estates. They were also a political class which held the majority of seats in the senate. They also engaged in intellectual pursuits and some were historians, philosophers, and other types of scholars.

The rich plebeians were elevated to the equite order, (cavalrymen) which was the lower tier of the aristocracy in the Mid Roman Republic. They were money lenders, bankers, merchants, owners of shipping companies, investors in mines, and high civil servants.

There was also a sort of middle class. The Romans did not have a term or classification for them. They were traders, shop keepers, and lower civil servants.

The poor plebeians were market stall holders, street vendors, workers in workshops, casual labourers or peddlers. Many were unemployed or underemployed. Many were clients of rich patrons and relied on cash hand-outs or casual commissions of jobs by the patrons in exchange of errands and political and other forms of support. Poverty was so bad that the Roman state distributed a grain dole for the poor.

Rural plebeians were small peasant-proprietors or tenant farmers.

Did the Plebians and Patricians have a war?

No the conflicts between patricians and plebeians did not lead to civil wars. The Conflict of the Orders between patricians and plebeians ended in the mid-3rd century BC. The Roman civil wars stared in the 1st century BC. The civil wars involved a conflict between the populares, a political faction which supported the cause of the poor, and the optimates, a conservative political faction which supported the interests of the aristocracy. They also involved personal rivalries.
