They did not flee, they were kicked out of their homes by the British government to make way for sheep. Make no mistake, it was NOT the English government, it was the BRITISH government.

Due to the Reformation, the presence of the Catholic was minimal in the Highlands during the time of the Clearances; its influence was practically non-existent. The strongest Christian denominations in the Scottish Highlands during the 18th century was the established Church of Scotland, joined in the 19th century by the Free Church of Scotland. Neither denomination is recorded as having either defended the crofters or officially condoning their removal from the land.
Why do people not populate Scotlands highlands?
The Scottish Highlands WERE populated until about 150 to 200 years ago when the people were evicted from their homes by English landlords to make way for sheep which were much more profitable. This was known as the 'Highland Clearances'. Many of the people who were evicted, emigrated to the USA and Canada, so if you have a neighbour with a Scottish surname, his ancestors may well have been crofters in the Highlands.
