They were the people who escaped before the mountain blew. There were 3 days of earthquakes and eruptions before the final pyroclastic cloud. That was something that no one could out run or hide from because it moves very fast and is very hot sending cinders, rocks, and gases over the whole area. Sixty-five acres were covered in Pompeii.

The people that escaped were few, and as Pompeii is surrounded by a plain, they went to the port of Herculaneum, where some went onto boats. Herculaneum felt the after shocks, and many perished there too, huddled together in houses and sheds. There were many dogs found, as were fleeing people. The site was only found by chance, it has a powerful feel to it......it was considered a place of ill repute and decadence.
