During the actual period of hostilities, there were two Vice-Presidents of the Union (the United States). The first was Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's first Vice President (March 4, 1861- March 4, 1865). The second was Andrew Johnson, who was actually a Democrat running with Lincoln in the National Union party after Lincoln's Republican opponents nominated John C. Fremont. During the final months of the war, when Johnson became President, there was no Vice-President.
The SouthThe Confederacy was led by president Jefferson Davis. Its Vice President was Alexander H. Stephens. He was later elected to the House of Representatives, and died just four months after being elected governor of Georgia in 1882.
