The Visigoths were the Goths of the west (the Ostrogoths were the Goths of the east). They are thought to have originated from Southern Sweden. They migrated to Poland and then to the Ukraine. They were pushed towars the River Danube by the Huns.

They were allowed to settle in the empire by emperor Valens. The rebelled when they were not given help during a famine and defeated a Roman army at the battle of Adrianople. This destroyed the core of the veteran army of the Eastern Roman Empire and temporarily weakened its military strength. This empire had to resort to recruiting barbarian solders, many of whom were Visigoths who, through this, gained political influence

Because King Alaric I, a king of the Visigoths, got involved in Roman politics, he fought a war in Italy against Stilicho, the head of the army of the Western Roman Empire. He lost. Stilicho had arranged a political deal with him, but was betrayed and killed. This led to a mishandling of Alaric who sieged Rome three times and sacked it on the third occasion. After this the Visigoths moved to south-western Gaul.

Despite the above the Visigoths' contribution of the fall of the empire was small. The Romans recovered from these setbacks, and the Visigoths were romanised and did not want to bring the empire to an end.
