We cannot know since the New Testament record is silent on this. We could speculate that they used the 'ship of the desert' the camel. This is how they are usually depicted, but there is no mention of this since the focus is on Jesus. Nor, incidentally are we told that there actually were three, only three gifts. There could have been two, three, four or even more.

The star that led the wise men, or kings, to Jesus could not have been any of the stars familiar to us today. No known star could actually lead men to the city of Jerusalem, and then turn around and lead them to the town of Bethlehem. And certainly no star in recorded history could point to the actual house in which Jesus lay. It had to be a very special star.

Historians have noted that there was no new star or unusual celestian event that appeared in the sky around the time that Jesus would have been born. However, there was a star that appeared in the mid-60s of the first century CE, long after the time of Jesus, but shortly before Matthew's Gospel was actually written. This star caused widespread interest in the Roman Empire and was seen as a sign from the gods, although even it could not have stopped over a single house. Since Matthew's Gospel was written within twenty years of this event, it is considered possible that its author was inspired by that star and the stories that grew up around it.

This question involves a confusion of themes. The shepherds form part of the narrative of Luke's Gospel, whose author knew nothing about the star in Matthew's Gospel.

From all the records kept by scribes in Palestine, Egypt, Rome, Greece, Persia and even China, historians have been unable to identify any star that the wise men of Matthew's Gospel could have followed. Ian Wilson (Jesus: The Evidence) says the hard reality is that Matthew offers insufficient historicity for anyone to be confident that there was a star at all.

The shepherds did not follow the star to find the baby Jesus. An angel told them how to find Jesus. It was the wise men who followed the star.

Did the 3 wise men see a star in the east or were they in the east and saw a star?

The three wise men were from the east as they said we have seen a star in the east and have come to follow it to look for a king. Sounds kind of confusing but the Star of Bethlehem moved. The star rose in the east and set in the west. The 3 wise men are probably from Persia and saw the star rise while they were still in Persia. The followed the star for a long time until finally it appeared to have stop moving; that is when they arrived in the land of Judea. This moving star could have been a Supernova, Comet or something completely supernatural, but this explains why the men from the East saw a Star rise in the Wast and traveled West. Matt 2:8-10 "After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed."

What are the names of the three wise men that came to see the baby Jesus?

The "answer" later, first a few points a) the Bible just calls them "wise men" - not "kings". b) the Bible does not say there were three. That is a conjecture based on there being three gifts - gold frankincense and myrrh c) the Bible does not name them. But, tradition in Christianity says they were Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.
