At Mundfordville, Kentucky, the Union had a garrison of 4,000 troops at that location. Union General Buell's goal was to move noth and unite that garrison with his main army. Unfortunately, Confederate cavalry from Braxton Bragg's army was able to contain Beull's march, leaving the garrison at Mundfordville alone with no available reinforcements insight. Bragg's army easily assaulted the garrison and won. This caused a Federal delay in its operations in the West.
