The Battle of Shiloh was an early battle in the US Civil War. It gained fame because of the many soldiers who died in the battle. It was a two day battle and General Grant claimed the victory.
The Union troops under U.S. Grant.
It was a close-run contest, and Grant was much criticised for leaving his army in a vulnerable position.
But it did actually mark the beginning of the end of Confederate influence in Western Tennessee, and the end of the war in the West was in sight. Also this battle saw the death of the Confederate General Sidney Johnston. He had been regarded as the best General in the South, and his loss greatly weakened the Confederate effort.
While there were more Union than Confederate casualties, the Union won the battle. The battle of Shiloh also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing was a 2-day Civil War battle resulting in 23,746 casualties. Union casualties were 13,047 (1,754 killed, 8,408 wounded, and 2,885 missing); Grant's army bore the brunt of the fighting over the two days, with casualties of 1,513 killed, 6,601 wounded, and 2,830 missing or captured. Confederate casualties were 10,699 (1,728 killed, 8,012 wounded, and 959 missing or captured).
Ultimately, Shiloh may be considered a Union victory because it led to later successful campaigns in the West. It was one of the bloodiest contests of the war, losses on each side reaching over 10,000, and, with the possible exceptions of Antietam and Gettysburg, it has been the subject of more controversy than any other Civil War battle.
The southern army, after the second full day, was exhausted, and during the night, 30,000 more union troops had arived, so they simply left the battlefield. History records the battle as won by the union army, but they let the southerners leave without much hasstle (both armies were worn out) ( many soldiers simply collapsed from exhaustion and died) some call it a draw....at any rate, the north held the ground, so by most standards should be declared the winner
The Union won the Battle of Shiloh on April 7, 1862. At one point, the Union retreated behind Shiloh Church but came back to win the battle.
