The Crimean War took place in 1853-1856 between Imperial Russia, on one hand, and, on the other, France, Great Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. Various battles were fought throughout southeastern Europe and in Russia itself, with Russian influence generally reduced as a result of its defeat in the conflict. It should be noted, however, that this war also contributed to the outbreak of World War I, as it fueled Russian ambitions to regain lost prestige while also inciting unrest in the Balkan territories of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The Crimean War, was fought between Britain and France (who were allies) and Russia. Britain and France began the war soon following Catherine the Great's expansion and modernization of Russia along the European border (Britain and France became nervous when, seeing that Russia could gain access to the Mediterranean, they saw Russia as toppling their hold on Europe). Britain and France soon won the war, taking Russia out of the European power struggle. The Russian czar at the time, Alexander II, blamed the loss of the Russian army on the "backwardness" of the Russian Empire. This backwardness referred to the use of serfs, or slaves, which Russia was the only country in Europe still being run on the backs of enslaved people. Alexander liberated these slaves on March 3, 1861, creating a series of reforms that continued with his son Nicholas II (who was overthrown by the Bolsheviks during World War I).
