The war was fought in Mexico and the U.S Mostly over new land for the country Here are my history class notes: * War With Mexico: * ** Polk wanted to expand U.S as far as possible ** He wanted New Mexico and California ** *** By purchase if possible- by force if necessary *** First belonged to Spain, but now Mexico when they won their independence *** Mexicans refused to see negotiator ** War Breaks Out in Texas ** *** Mexico did not like Texas being part of U.S *** Texas and Mexico could not agree on a border *** Texas wanted Rio Grande, Mexico wanted Nueces River *** April 25, 1846, Mexico opened fired on Americans patrolling Rio Grande *** Congress declared war ** Fall of New Mex. and California ** *** General Stephan Kearny led Army of The West *** Took control of New Mex. without firing a shot *** John C. Fremont led rebellion in California *** Raised flag showing grizzly bear in blackberry juice, (California was now Bear Flag Republic) *** Kearny partnered with Fremont and soon got control of California ** U.S invades Texas ** *** Zachery Taylor (General of American Troops) "Old Rough and Ready" *** 6,000 troops took Mex. city of Monterrey *** Santa Anna marched to meet Taylor with 20,000 troops *** February 1847, 2 armies met at Buena Vista *** Santa Anna reported, "Both armies have been cut to pieces." He retreated south ending northern Mexico war *** General Winfield Scott (Old Fuss and Feathers) landed in Veracruz, fought toward Mexico City *** 1,000 soldiers and 100 cadets (Los Niños Heroes) fought to defend Chapultepec Castle *** Scott's army captured Mexico City, Mexican official muttered "God is a Yankee" ** Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago ** *** Mexico agreed to give up Texas and region known as Mexico cessation (including California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming.) *** U.S paid Mexico $15 million and promised to protect 80,000 Mexicans living in the new U.S ** "From Sea to Shining Sea" ** *** 1853, U.S purchased more land from Mexico for $10 million, now nation stretched from "Sea to Shining Sea" Hope that helps!!!
