By March of 1865, the US Civil War was almost history, yet the Confederates in North Carolina fought on. At Bentonville, Confederate Joseph Johnston was up against nearly 70,000 troops under the command of Union Major General William T. Sherman. The battle covered March 18, to March 21. The out manned and tired Confederate forces of Johnston lost this battle, despite their heroism. As an aside, the son of Confederate General Hardee, his only son died in battle, having been wounded on March 21, 1865. Against his better judgment, Hardee had reluctantly allowed his 16 year old son to enlist.
