The Confederate Fort Macon was located on the coast of North Carolina. The fort became a target for Union artillery from March 23 to April 26, 1862. The fort surrendered on the latter date and helped Union General Burnside secure more Southern forts. Later on, it would be General Ambrose Burnside to replace George B. McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac.
