An American army of 2,400 men, led by George Washington, who crossed the ice-choked Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776 and the following morning attacked by surprise the Hessian garrison in Trenton. The victory was decisive: the Hessians lost 29 killed, included their commander Colonel Johann Rall and 918 prisoners. The American suffered only 5 casualties.
