If he stayed loyal to the Pope and church he wouldn't have been able to get the Divorce because the Pope refused, so he broke away from the Church and created The Church Of England. This way he was able to get the divorce, get money and also get power at the same time. After this he closed down all of the Monasteries, chucked Monks out of them, he took all of the Gold, money and power from the Monasteries for himself.
