The Aeneid was written by Vergil, the Thebais by Statius, the Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes, and the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer.

Poets wrote epic poems.

They still do. Pablo Neruda's Canto General and John Heath Stubbs' Artorius are both examples of epic poems written within the last century.
