Geoffrey Howe's on November 13th 1990. Until November 1st 1990, Howe served as Deputy Prime Minister, Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons, having previously also been both Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary. His resignation speech brought a crisis of leadership within the Conservative Party to the forefront of British politics, leading to a leadership challenge by Michael Heseltine that prompted a ballot of Conservative MPs on November 20th 1990. Despite winning 204 of 379 MPs' votes, then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was forced to withdraw her candidacy for re-election on November 22nd, subsequently resigning on the 28th.
