Best Answer

Elephants have been harvested for their ivory since times immemorial. Trinkets made of ivory have been found in china dating to the pre-christian dynasties. As late as 1900, a thriving business to harvest ivory and transport it from the African interior to the Coastal towns existed.

However, uncontrolled hunting and killing of elephants, and subsequent destruction of their habitat led to a precipice drop in their population, especially in Asia and Africa. So, no one can take credit for deciding to kill elephants for their ivory.
