Why 86 ford ranger hesitates 2.3 liter?

I had a the same problem with my ranger, it turned out to be an extremely small worp in the head, I took it to an engine shop and had it milled down smooth and flat (this would be measured in the thousandth's of degrees, it is not noticable to the naked eye). It cost me about $200 I removed the head myself and took it to them. It was a factory flaw from casting at Ford. Of course there are other way's of getting past this, even if you have the same problem. A cold air intake system (Injen makes a really good one), and a decent muffler (one with as little backpressure as possible, such as a Deltaflow flowmaster,<- Thrush is a the generic flowmaster and it's much cheaper, Walker Quietflow, <- this is a good quiet racing exhaust, avoid the myth, backpressure is bad...). Another trick is to ditch the factory head altogether and find one from a Thunderbird Super coupe (early 90's model with special body package) with the turbo charged 2.3liter (you may have to purchase the computer as well). This produces a stupid amount of power and can be found at several salvage yards. Make sure you get the exhaust manifold is included (this is where the turbo is mounted you will likely need to find an aftermarket turbo pressure gauge) check all part for cracks before purchasing. These parts were design for horsepower and high durability. You will outrun most cars and trucks on the road if these parts are properly installed.
