AM has a frequency range of 531 kHz to 1602 kHz and on the other hand FM has a frequency range between 8705 MHz to 108 MHz. If we talk about the bandwidth of AM then it is 1071 KHz and bandwidth of FM is 20.5 MHz.
According to the bandwidth FM should be used for long distance transmission but it is not used for long distance but AM is used fir long distance transmissions. the answer is here.
Long distance transmissions are also decided by the Spectrum of the Signal in frequency domain by doing the Fouriertransform of the Signal.
If we draw the Spectrum of AM waves the we find that their is a main loop in the central part of the spectrum with a high frequency and on the left and right side of this loop their are side loop which are very smaller then the main loop. In FM information can be recover from the main loop only not from the side loops. On the other hand in AM waves all the loops in spectrum is of same size and information can be recover from all the loops.
That is why AM is used for long distance transmission.

There are 5 types pf protocols used in the computer network.
All signal multiplexing techniques were invented to permit a single physical communication channel to carry multiple different signals. This reduces the investment costs in physical communication channels: e.g. long distance telegraph lines, long distance telephone lines, microwave links, orbiting communication satellites, fiber optic cable. Time Division Multiplexing can be implemented using either analog or digital signaling means.
Frequency modulation is not used for long distance transmission because it has the problem of limited band width.
* Digital signals suffer less interferences than analogue signals. This means that when you listen to a digital signal you won't hear a hissing sound, as within digital signals regenerator circuits are used to clean "noisy" pulses. * Digital signals can be made very short so more pulses can be carried around each second, which means more information can be passed on.
-> frequency shift keying promotes long distance communication. ->it has high security. ->low noise ->efficiency is high. ->decoding of signal is easy.

Fiber optics is used for long distance communication due to its various advantages..
Smoke signals is a long form of long distance communication. These signals were used in Ancient China and by the Native Americans and Yamanas.
In 1840 Samuel Morse invented the first telegraph this influenced long distance communication by making it a lot quicker and more efficient
The telephone IS a long distance communication device.
