It was a Catholic mission to introduce Christianity to the native peoples of that area, built in the early 18th Century when Texas was a part of Mexico, and Mexico was a colonized territory belonging to Spain. The builders of the Alamo could not have foreseen that Mexico and Texas would someday become nations, and the Alamo would be used as a fort.
