The most common place for oil leaks is the sump/crankcase cover gasket. A torn gasket will allow oil to escape. A common cause could be a blown head gasket putting too much pressure in the crankcase.

i have 8 hp horiz. Briggs leaking at the mail seal, flywheel side. I put a new seal on but it still leaks. I suspect too much crankcase pressure, maybe the breather is not open enough? anyone got some ideas on this? when I turned the engine by hand without the seal present, lots of air vented out the oil drain hole behind the seal. that is why I suspect high pressure. Is this normal? it runs great but leaks out the flywheel side main seal. ms
