Britain took the Philippines in 1762. The importance of the islands was not appreciated in Britain at the time, partly because Australia and New Zealand were not yet part of the British Empire. In 1763 the islands were returned to Spain in exchange for (1) part of Florida and (2) the Spanish withdrawl from Portugal. Joncey
