The Caspian tiger was basically hunted to extinction. However, recent genetic evidence has shown that the Siberian tiger and the Caspian were nearly identical, with the two separating just a few thousand years ago.
Caspian tigers once lived in a range from the Caspian Sea all the way to Iran and western China. However, when their range was settled by people from Russia in the 1800s, the area was used to grow cotton, decimating habitat. In addition, the tigers and their most important prey, wild boar, were hunted to oblivion for sport. The last Caspian tiger to be seen was spotted in 1958. If we don't do something about poaching soon, the same will happen to the types of tigers that are still alive today.

Hunting and loss of habitat doomed the Caspian tiger. Recent evidence shows the Siberian tiger to be nearly 100% genetically identical with the Caspian.
