You don't say which letter, and Columbus wrote many of them - practically all in search of funding for his voyages to the Indies by a western route. He was rejected by Portugal, England and Genoa before he wrote to the Kings of Spain, who at first also rejected his claims. And quite rightly, too: all those countries had scientists with a pretty good knowledge of geography, and most recognized that Columbus' estimates were wide off the mark: he estimated the distance to Japan by western route to be 3,500 km while in reality it was over 20,000 km. Columbus' reaching of the Caribbean islands before his provisions ran out was pure luck, although Columbus to his dying day remained convinced that he had indeed reached some islands near the coast of India.
