England and France basically wanted to avoid a second world war, because the first had been so terrible. They thought that if they gave Germany land in the east, that it would satisfy Hitler. Another reason, which people don't often remember or mention, is that at the time, England in particular would not have been able to fight off Hitler. A lot of the appeasement had to do with buying England more time to build and develop planes, radar and other technologies that they would need later on. Chamberlain gets raked over the coals but he wasn't a total idiot; if England had gone to war with Germany in '38, they would've been crushed. That extra year made a lot of difference.

To start with they tried appeasement but in the end they declared war when Nazi lead Germany invaded Poland.
