Lennie is feeling her hair because it is very pretty and soft, however she soon becomes frustrated with him and yells at him to stop and to let go. He gets scared and holds tighter not letting go of her hair. She screams and struggles but he covers her mouth and talks to himself about why she has to struggle and telling her not to because George will be mad or something like that and then eventually he breaks her neck because he was yanking her back and forth.
Lennie becomes angry with Curley's wife because he is not supposed to be talking to her, as instructed by George. The result of his anger is that he ends up accidentally killing her during a struggle when she becomes frightened and he doesn't know his own strength.
