They weren't made that way ... they're old and time has had its toll. The neck is thin and easy to break, so are the arms.
Natural wear and tear I would think. Before the time of tools such as scissors everything was done with the hands and this caused the finger nails to wear down and essentially take care of themselves. ---Rob
