With the highest mountain in the Australian Alps, Mt Kosciuszko, being a mere 2228m above sea level (some sources say 2,229m), the term "Alps" is really a misnomer. Nonetheless, they are the highest mountains on the mainland, receiving good snowfalls in winter.
