I think it because there is more energy needed in order to break down the bonds in the hydrocarbon. Making it less efficient for fuels

it maybe because alkenes are more useful as making other things such as magarine but im not sure, they might not be sufficient burners in oxygen.

I think if you burn them they can produce carbon dioxide, NOX, POX, SOX ect. Some are bad for you and others aren't. carcinogenic hydrocarbons can give you cancer.
